The cemetery on top of the hill, Red Cliff, CO

It took quite an effort for us to climb to the cemetery, not just because of the difference in heights, but also because of the altitude. I got a slight headache that did not leave me that evening.

I had booked the hotel room in Red Cliff not knowing that I was in for something special. This turned out to be a great treat. This out-of-the-way little town was one of the first towns in that part of Colorado (Eagle Country). It got its start from mining. It was a regular western town with salons, banks, a church, and even brothels. The original Denver and Rio Grande railroad used to go through town. (The tracks are still in place!)

I had a hard time locating the place since it was surrounded by parkland and we even had to cross a 13000 foot mountain pass before we found it, on a narrow road beside the Green Bridge on US Route 24. The town itself is at an elevation above 9000 feet.

This is the only hotel in town, and the only restaurant in town is not open every day of the week. There is no gas station here. This is not a tourist destination!

BTW, the hotel was also great!
