The Maitland No 1 was a rail ferry launched in 1913 which carried rail cars of coal from Ashtabula OH to Port Maitland On, the cars continued by rail to Hamilton to feed the steel mills.
The widening of the Welland Canal in 1932 allowed Lakers to bring coal directly to Hamilton and the Maitland was laid up.
After changing ownership several time and legal delays the US government requisitioned it's engines for war use and it became a barge.
After changing ownership several more times she floundered in rough water in 1981.
