Something silly I posted on Facebook about my Century ride:
My 14th Lifetime Century: It’s Like a Two Touchdown Lead!” from a breezy and cool Friday, October 5, 2018.
I wasn’t sure I was going to get a chance to complete a Century ride this year.
I’ve been stuck for over a year on 13 lifetime 100-mile rides and didn’t want to stay with that unlucky number.
Friday was a day I thought could give me a chance at #14 with the comfortable temperatures predicted.
The KICKOFF to my 14th Century ride began just after 8 AM when I headed out on the roads.
As I was PASSING the FIELDS today, my GOAL was to see what the ride could turn into.
It was definitely a cool and sometimes breezy day with temperatures only in the 60s all during the ride.
The real feel seemed lower with the winds from the North and NE. My only PENALITY for such a cool day of riding was the need to wear my arm warmers the entire ride.
I’m glad I had that DEFENSE against the cool feel in the air! Actually, the cool and comfortable day ended up being my best OFFENSE to complete this Century ride.
The energy zapping heat of summer was gone on this day.
I actually rode west at the start of the ride on Route 282 towards and beyond Honey Brook.
This is the same road where on my 2016 Century ride, a large deer tried to TACKLE me.
Though the deer came suddenly from my BLIND SIDE, I stayed up and suffered only a bruised hand and no serious damage to my bicycle.
Today’s ride had no such INSTANT REPLAY, thankfully.
Today’s ride consisted of me riding out in the SAFETY of the countryside west of Downingtown and into Eastern Lancaster County.
However, when I came back towards Downingtown for the last QUARTER of the ride I did encounter some traffic SIGNALS.
However, I always kept my eye on the GOAL so I could POST this ride both on Strava and Facebook.
Being 66-years-old, some might say I may be in the LAST QUARTER of my PLAYING CAREER.
I prefer to think I’m still late in the THIRD QUARTER and still have some GAMES left in my legs for long rides.
However, I am feeling my age and actually went into OVERTIME to complete this ride in 7.5 hours. It actually was my slowest of the 14 lifetime century rides.
I’m old, a VETERAN, I guess…
When I do these rides, I return home during the ride for a lunch break. I can’t eat Cliff Bars and drink just water for these Century rides.
It wasn’t really a HALFTIME break for when I got to the house I already had 78 miles in, making the LAST QUARTER kind of an “easy” ending to the day on the bike.
I’m going to give up on this commentary now and PUNT for I cannot think of anything else to say.
I’m going to HANDOFF to Darryl & Andy, two fabulous COLOR COMMENTATORS for their POST-GAME comments.
Darryl, Andy and I were childhood classmates and played many a GAME in the schoolyards growing up in Mahanoy City, PA.
My ride ended with me GAINING 102.2 miles bringing my SEASON total to just over 4,000 miles for 2018.
So now I have a TWO TOUCHDOWN lead in Lifetime Centuries for all those sitting on the SIDELINES who are not cyclists.
It’s GAME OVER, winning by TWO TOUCHDOWNS!
