On the way to Oswiecim

view map

"Auschwitz" is the German name the Nazis gave to the little town of Oswiecim, Poland.
At the beginning World War II Auschwitz and the nearby Birkenau became the location of largest extermination camps the world has ever known.
A systematic murdering of thousands of people of specific races (not just Jews) and nations' members happened there,
with human atrocities the world has never seen. The word Genocide was introduced here for the first time in the human history .
No words can really convey the concept of a human tragedy of such large scale in an effort to describe the German atrocities during World War II.
Birkenau Concentration camp is about three kilometers from Auschwitz and is shown in the second part of this gallery.
