There is a ivy hedge that took over part of the fence line between Sue’s yard and ours.
Over the last twenty years it has become its own micro ecosystem.
It is an island of green cover where hummers nest and spiders float webs in the breeze.
In the fall it blooms and it’s not very showy but it provides nectar and pollen in abundance.
A wide variety of bees, wasps, and the occasional beetle come in for a big feast before winter.
The spiders also get to feast up on the bounty catching even the biggest wasps.
I’ll prune the hedge this winter and it will look like the Lock Ness Monster.
When I am done the annual process will start anew.
The hummers will homestead again next spring.
The children of the spiders will weave webs in next summers breezes and
the pollinators will come next autumn for one last feast.
All of this because of these little blooms that are easily missed in their plainness.
