Galveston's "Mosquito Fleet" calls the historic dock at Pier 19 home.
Located where Jean Lafitte's pirate ships (1815-21) once sailed, the Galveston Harbor was a pirate stronghold called "Campeachy".
The Galveston Wharves & Cotton Press Company chartered and built the early dock in 1854.
Galveston Bay was a key point during the Civil War. In 1863, Confederate marine assaults around the bay freed the island of Federal occupation.
During the roaring ‘20s, rum runners called the Pier home.
Since 1932 Pier 19 has not been altered except for required maintenance. The present physical appearance of Pier 19 is desirably
affected by the colorful "Mosquito Fleet" shrimping boats, which use this wharf.
