One of these little tiles on the left wing was damaged on the shuttle Columbia when it was hit by a piece of insulating foam from the external fuel tank during liftoff. A hole was formed in the wing and it brought down Columbia during reentry, resulting in the death of all the astronauts. This happened in 2003.
