20180809 0718 SERIES - Ruby-throated Hummingbird.jpg

Ottawa West

Five images, my final posting of this Hummingbird family (less Dad).

As I mentioned in my last posting,(click "NEXT") one of the young had left the nest when I got to the site. Apparently, it had fluttered down into the water below the nest and had to be rescued by one of the photographers on site. I am not sure whether the first fledgling left the nest on its own accord or whether it was pushed out or simply lost its balance. In any case, after being rescued, it was reportedly placed on a piece of bark which was wedged in between two branches or two small tree-trunks. From there it reportedly eventually flew up to the branch where it was now perched.

The top image shows the remaining nestling laying in the nest seemingly quite comfortable as there is plenty of room now.

The fledgling was found on this branch in a location not easy to photograph. It appeared to be looking for Mom. Mom had reportedly found the fledged young and had been feeding it.

Here Mom returned to feed this fledgling after first having fed the one remianing in the nest.

The fledged young one here appears to be looking at the photographers taking its pictures.

Several times the fledgling flapped its wings as if wanting to take off. It did so after a short period of time and we totally lost sight of it. Presumably it is perched somewhere up higher in the thick branches where Mom will no doubt be able to find it.

Note: When I returned to the site the following afternoon, the second nestling had fledged too. The nest was empty and I could find no sign of any of the Hummingbirds.

Here ends my experience with my first ever sighting of an active/occupied Hummingbird's nest. A memorable experience for sure.
