A la fin du Moyen-Âge, Rome n’est plus le centre de gravité du monde Chrétien. Celui-ci s’est déplacé plus au nord où se concentrent pouvoirs politique et économique. Dans cette optique, Avignon convient mieux. La papauté s’y installe en 1309.
Jusqu’en 1378 Avignon fut le siège unique de la papauté.
Entre 1378 et 1418, à la suite du Grand Schisme d’Occident, deux papes rivaux co-existaient, l’un à Rome, l’autre à Avignon.
At the end of the Middle Ages, Rome is not anymore the center of gravity of the Christian world. This one moved further north where concentrate political and economic powers. Considering this perspective, Avignon suits better. The papacy settles down there in 1309 and will remain its unique seat until 1378.
