In the 18th century, Cordoba experienced a significant increase to its religious orders, wherein the most popular was the Franciscan capuchins.Brother Diego José de Cadiz belonged to this order and was responsible for the creation of the popular monument named the Cristo de los Desagravios y Misericordia, today commonly known as Cristo de los Faroles, a work carried out by Juan Navarro León in 1794.The monument is located in one of the most beautiful and mystical squares in Cordoba, the Plaza de los Capuchinos, named after the austere Franciscan convent founded in 1629 on a site formerly occupied by houses belonging to the Marquess of Almunia.
