Trees like this are incredibly important. The continued destruction of grassy box woodland on the north-west slopes of
New South Wales means that the species that depend on this habitat for their survival are pushed rapidly towards extinction.
A tree such as this, with its hollows and fallen limbs, is an important refuge for traveling birds from predation, for pollinating
insects that can then go on and pollinate other species, as well as being beautiful in its own right.
Unfortunately, too often trees such as this are simply in the way of a larger spray boom or plough, or in the way when a contour
bank needs to be installed. The legislative protections have been weakened and are rarely if ever enforced. Our agrigcultural
landscapes are becoming biologically and aesthetically impoverished as a result.
