Floodgates at dusk

At flood stage 6 million gallons (per second) of Mississippi river water pass the city of New Orleans.

This upriver structure diverts water to protect levees in New Orleans from being undermined or over-topped.

This image was taken January 2016. The spillway has now, once again, been opened to protect the city.

That is an incredible amount of water. I can imagine the danger it presents when not adequately controlled. This is a very powerful image that conveys all of that admirably. ~BV~

Awesome photo, Phil. The perspective is very strong as is the detail. Very good that your shutter speed captures the separation of the water as it pours through the spillway. Nice touch that. The photo was taken at a beautiful time of day and the line of golden clouds above the horizon gives the image a nice bit of warm color. Splendid cloud cover adds extra interest to an altogether excellent photo. Well done. VOTE.

A terrific composition that captures the last of the day’s colour and the power of the water admirably. Your choice of shutter speed perfectly displays the turbulence and power of the river. Outstanding photography and processing, Phil.
