On the second floor of the Palazzo Vecchio is one of the most interesting rooms in the Palace.
Known as the "Sala delle Carte Geografiche" (Hall of maps) ,
In this room there are 54 maps conceived by an Italian priest, mathematician and mapmaker Ignazio Danti .
(not the Dante of "Inferno" fame).
These maps of different parts of the world, decorate the fronts of cabinets aroud the room.
This hall of maps is centered by a huge globe also conceived by Danti, which originally was designed to descend from the ceiling.
This apparently was not realized, and the globe, exposed at some point to weather, has faded and
is no longer legible.
Nevertheless, it is impressive, seated in a special base made for it to easily turn "with one finger" in its day.
