As familiar as I was with this Arabic well systems as we had one in my old farm, I was never thinking they were still working in 1980 in Portugal!
It was 6 years after the 'revolution' of 1974, and the Country was modernizing fast!
Soon, we would join the EU, and the use of Donkeys, as work Animals was completely forbiden! In this case (as in many others) a totally stupid measure, as the Donkey population declined sharply, they became almost completely extinct!
It just proves Conservationism cannot be made from the burocratic offices in Brussels...
