Sandhill Cranes


We don't see many of these birds in the West, but there are several pairs who have decided to make this part of the country their full time home.
This pair consists of an older female (around 20 yrs old I believe) who lost her mate last winter and who managed to attract a younger male passing by. They nested but only produced one chick which did not live.

Wonderful red forehead patch. We have many around here in the spring and summer but they are alway reddish brown from the time they spend taking dust baths in the fields. Your birds have such a nice clean gray appearance. V
