Ring-billed Gulls form pairs while wintering in the Bay Area, but don't nest here. These two show the brown head striping of the non-breeding adult; but in January (the start of our spring) the red ocular rings that go with breeding plumage are starting to form, and the birds are engaging in courting or pair-bonding behavior.
