The Inner Gatehouse. Two large towers (either side of the bridge in the foreground) defended the 14th c. entrance to the castle. In the 15th c. a small fortified enclosure or barbican was built in front of the gate to protect it further. The inner court of bailey contained all the principle domestic buildings of the castle. Sir Thomas erected the outer wall, corner towers and enclosing ditch of the inner court in the 1370s. During the 15th c. the domestic buildings around the court were extended and modernised by Walter, 1st Baron Hungerford.
