Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is a deactivated lighthouse on the Oregon Coast
located 1.2 miles offshore just north of Cannon Beach. "Terrible Tillie"
as it was known, for its erratic weather and terrible commute for both the
keepers and suppliers. It was constructed in 1880 and lit for the first time
on January 21, 1881. It was finally decommissioned in 1957 having become the
most expensive lighthouse in the U.S. to operate, and sold to private owners in 1959.
It is now part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
