Many a child who was a victim of Polio walked due to this woman, Sister Elizabeth Kenny.

Elizabeth Kenny (20 September 1880 – 30 November 1952) was an unaccredited Australian nurse who promoted a controversial new approach to the treatment of poliomyelitis. Her findings ran counter to conventional medical wisdom; they demonstrated the need to exercise muscles affected by polio instead of immobilising them. Kenny's principles of muscle rehabilitation became the foundation of physical therapy, or physiotherapy.

Her life story was told in the 1946 film Sister Kenny. She was portrayed by Rosalind Russell, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Kenny.

Let's hear it for the unsung, or at least undersung, heroes. Far better to honour them than some politician or other.

A great tribute to a powerful person. She lived and worked in Minneapolis for 11 years in the 1940s and 50 and is remembered fondly in this area.

A colorful and interesting tribute. I remember when I got the vaccine. Probably in the early 60s, since the vaccine came in a sugar cube. Was administered to all the kids in our little school. V

A delightful art work and the accompanying information is excellent.
Polio was around in my day too, Laine, and this is a wonderful picture and story. I remember children with leg irons and in big wheeled beds. I think I have heard of Sister Kenny but certainly the Salk Vaccine which has virtually eliminated the disease.
