The famous 'Whirlpool Galaxy' and smaller NGC 5195 to the north are a gravitationally interacting pair of galaxies, which causes the pronounced spiral arms of M 51 and the sweeping tidal arms around its companion.
Both galaxies are about 23 Mill. light years away.
