The original dam dates back to about 1824. This dam once was part of the old Morris Canal system. It connected Lake Hopatcong with the Delaware River. Coal and iron ore was transported on it until the railroads took over. The canal system followed the Musconetcong River. The area was settled about 250 years ago. It was the homeland of the Lenni Lenape Indians. Many names of towns in Warren and Sussex County still bear Indian names. This area is a fisherman's haven.
