From Schruns in the Montafon Valley a road goes 5km northeast up to the another beautiful valley and village of Silbertal where silver and copper were mined on its mountain from the 14th to the 18th century.
Standing in front of the St Agatha Chapel on the peak, the statue commemorates the tale that there had been a mining tunnel at this spot, which caved in while men were working in it, and buried them alive. Lying under the rubble, the miners promised to build a church in honour of their patron saint Agatha, if they were ever rescued. They were indeed rescued and kept their promise.
