Sphecid wasp (Ammophila sp.)

Reveler Conservation Area

I came across this wasp just after the sun rose. It was clinging to the weedy stem, unmoving. After taking a few photos and reviewing them I realized it was hanging onto the stem with its jaw, which you can see is clasped tightly around the plant. Many Hymenoptera (bees and wasps) sleep this way, passing the night clinging to vegetation with their jaws.

Interesting fact, I had no idea. I doubt any one of us could clench our jaw all night. V

Most interesting Christine. Not keen on wasps here in Australia as they endanger bees.
