1843 - Prisoners drawing their beans

by Frederic Remington

During an expedition to take control of the Mexican town of Mier, Texan soldiers were imprisoned
by the Mexican Army and subjected to a lottery. The drawing of beans involved soldiers drawing
out of a jar a white or black bean to determine their fates: life in prison or execution.

Looks like Remington was there to witness this scene !! Interesting history !! I love the uniforms of those I'm guessing are the elite - and the art work !!
