Prickly ash fruit (Zanthoxylum americanum)

Ottawa west

The prickly ash shrub is the primary host plant for the caterpillars of the Giant Swallowtail butterfly in our area. It is in the Rue family, and where other plants in this family grow, the swallowtails will also lay their eggs on those. Up this way, prickly ash is the only wild growing native plant used by the species.
