By the late 1890es, it was decided to design a standardised light to be placed along the shores of the Weser river. In 1980, the one in Sandstedt needed to be replaced since the navigable waters had moved considerably. In a last ditch effort the light was saved from demolition and placed in front of the Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven as a "gate guardian"
