Bud Helmerick came to Walker Lake in 1948. He build a wonderful homestead on Swan Island, which is still a private inholding. He also built several cabins throughout the area, including this one on the south-east shore of Walker Lake. When the land became a park in 1980, many cabins were torn down, but this one was allowed to remain. Although not a Public Use Cabin, it remains a "shelter cabin" for those needing a place to stay.
