Their origins are unknown. They came to Venice in 1254, but although they were originally thought to be Greek from 4th century BCE, their composition makes a Roman origin 2-3rd century CE more likely.
Originally displayed outside on the balcony of the Basilica, they were brought inside in the 1980s and replaced with replicas to preserve them.
