Replaced the wood screw with a machine screw and nuts & washers.
Tested with the Sun at pretty much the same altitude as it will be when setting up for the eclipse. The azimuth of the Sun at the time, based on SkySafari, was 88°.
Orienting the compass so the shadow falls at that mark indicates celestial North.
