Except for one monstrosity, most of George Town's skyscrapers are outside the historic district. The exception, KOMTAR Tower, was
completed in 1986--at the time the second-tallest building in Asia. About 500 historic structures were razed to make way for the tower.
It created a huge flap, resulting in the involved officials losing their jobs and paving the way for strict historic preservation laws.
