We hustled up from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, to Salem Massachusetts. It was about 300 miles which went well, for the most part. There was a back-up on the Mass Pike that cost us about 15 minutes. The worst part, however, was navigating the streets when we got close to Salem. Salem has a lot of tourists and a lot of traffic. Driving in traffic is not my favorite pass time. We found a place in a garage and parked for the duration of our visit to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.
We saw a movie about the Salem witch trials which was pretty good. We also saw a movie about Salem which wasn't very informative but had nice pictures. We did a tour of the Narbonne house which was built in 1675. As with many old houses many modifications have been made over the 350 years since it was built. The back yard was an archaeology treasure trove of broken stuff. I think I am getting a little tired of old houses. I like ones that have a cool story and lots to see. This was not one of those. We also visited the Custom House which was built in 1819. It is almost all original. One of its claims to fame is that Nathaniel Hawthorne worked there for four years. During that time he was working on the Scarlet Letter. He needed a day job!
Our hotel was only 32 miles away but it took over an hour to get there. It is the pits going places at local rush hour.
