I had learned about Grace Darling in my early years of schooling and was pleased in 2014 to visit
the area she came from in Northumberland. This book was inside Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island
Grace Darling
Off the coast of Northumberland a storm's taking place
The lighthouse keeper and his young daughter Grace
Are braving the waves of the cruel treacherous sea
Today on Farne Island, they will create history.
In Longstone lighthouse Grace wakes from her sleep
To the sound of voices, echoing from out of the deep
The dawn is just breaking as a storm hits the sea
So she summons her father, who responds to her plea.
The waters are icy and the northern winds blow
But Grace and her father have no choice but to go.
Down to the black rocks where their help is in need
So they untie the life boat and in fear they proceed.
There's a ship in distress, many souls set to drown
As the violent storm carries the old vessel aground
Captain and crew, are facing a slow watery death
As they cling onto rocks and fight for each breath.
But there in the darkness two shadows appear
As Grace and her father row their little boat near
The lighthouse keeper shone his light all around
Searching for survivors, only nine men were found.
But if not for the keen ears of that lady called Grace
Nine souls would have drown, and lost without trace
The brave help she gave on those high stormy seas
Is etched with affection in Northumberland's history
