Durant cette dernière période de l'ère « pré-impériale » sept grands États émergent et leurs souverains prennent le titre de « roi » (wang) et se livrent des guerres incessantes.
Période d’affrontements sanglants donc, mais aussi de progrès techniques et économiques déterminants. C’est aussi à ce moment que naissent le confucianisme, le taoïsme, le légisme, qui ont profondément influencé l'histoire de la Chine.
