Blacktail Deer
by Laura Milholland

San Rafael, CA

Tonight's visitor to the hillside across from our house (just around dinner time, so not yet dark).
The Blacktail Deer, or Black-tailed Deer are a subspecies of the Mule Deer.
This is one of two youngsters that nibbles in our neighborhood, along with mom.
Columbian Black-tailed Deer
(Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

other sizes: small medium original auto

This is a quite young deer - a bit past the spots stage (for a few weeks now at least). But yes, Black-tailed are smaller than Mule deer. They tend to be more brown/golden brown too - while Mule deer may be more grey.

Handsome doe. Very nice shot of her. Are Blacktail Deer smaller than Mule Deer? Or is her size just an age thing? We don't have either types here. Just Whitetail Deer.

Super nice catch! I'm still trying to get a good deer shot around here.
