The New North Quay lighthouse stands outside the Maritime Museum by St Helier's marina. The North Quay of the existing harbour (St Helier didn't even have a harbour until the 1700s) was enlarged in the 20th century and renamed the 'New' North Quay. The lighthouse was decommissioned and, in 1996, it became a memorial to the 300 islanders who were taken to Nazi concentration camps and prisons and the 21 who died in those camps and prisons during the Second World War. Their names are inscribed on a plinth around its base.
