5-28-2016 Hairy Woodpecker On the Wenatchee River

BE SURE TO VIEW IN ORIGINAL SIZE :)

So, you may ask, "why is it called a 'hairy' woodpecker?"

I believe it is the small tuft of 'hair' just at the root
of the bill just in front of the eye.

Hal, Elaine, Cindy, and Sally, thanks for your comments. The woodpeckers are among my
favorite birds.

A handsome bird. The splash of red on his head adds to his beauty.
A fine capture Terry.

Perfect! I love all of the different woodpeckers.

I love the muted tones on this photograph.
The red tuft on the back of the woodpecker's head adds drama.
Another winner, Terry.

Thanks for the explanation of the amusing name.
