Bendigo~The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion

We visited at the weekend

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion situated near Bendigo, Victoria will be the same size and design as The Great Stupa of Gyantse in Tibet. Currently rising 25 meters above Bendigo’s distinctive bushland, The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion has grown well past its halfway point. While a further 20 meters will be added to complete the exterior there is already a lot to see at this amazing project which is about to become the largest Buddhist Stupa in the Western world.

The Great Stupa is home to many holy objects. Foremost amongst these is the magnificent Jade Buddha for Universal Peace. Which is the largest Buddha carved from gem quality jade in the world. The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace has been on a world tour since 2009 and over 10 million people have seen it. When the tour is over, The Jade Buddha will come to its final home at The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo.

This video shows the work done since I took this photo in 2017...it's really lovely.

.... and thank you Laine re your public comment about the small and unpleasant interlopers to the lovely city of Bendigo. I do love the thought of your Easter procession with so many wonderful cultures represented.

To think that Barbara and I thought we knew Bendigo! Compare this striking image of yours with this one from the Great Stupa at Gyantse...http://www.pbase.com/travelgame/image/158044551 Regards, Philip

This is amazing Laine! Fancy it being in Bendigo and I have never seen it! I think maybe Bendigo (just some people) are objecting strongly to another religious building??? That is sad. Your pic is great! V

Silly me, ask and ye shall be given an answer: the silvery structure on top is known as the Nibbana (the jewel)and represents one of the elements of buddhism

Most impressive- who could have expected something like this in such a place- thank you for the informative details! ~V~ P.S. I am sure it is not a heli pad but what is that silvery structure on top?
