Skunk cabbage, eastern (Symplocarpus foetidus)

Osgoode

This is a rare plant around Ottawa with only a few locations known, but it is common further south. It emerges early, often before the snow has melted. Come summer, there will be gigantic green leaves.

Interesting that it is rare in your area, it's very prolific in Maine. My swampy area has a large colony. It was late to immerge this spring. Nice capture! V

Strong determined plants - a wonderful color, quite different from skunk cabbage here.
