I bought this book, One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in France, about 20 years ago.
Dan & I are trying to see each & every town in this book (and have been quite successful, I might add)!
This year we will spend 3 glorious (we hope) nights in Ars-en-Ré at the far end of Ile de Ré to go birding and enjoy the sun & surf.

I had to look up that island - it sounds good, and I like your idea of visiting the 101 towns, but I imagine you'll discover other gems by chance too.
