Orion Nebula (Messier 42): SERIES of Two Images

Beckwith Township, ON

This is my first attempt at Deep Sky Astrophotography. Well, to be honest…NOT my first ATTEMPT…But the first time I was familiar enough with the equipment to get something useable to process and post.

This is BY FAR, the most challenging photography I have attempted (to date).

The camera and lens were mounted on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer equatorial mount. It took three attempts to get anything; and the fourth time out was perfect in terms of polar alignment and tracking; and ultimately led to the image presented here.

TOP Image: 30 x 30 second subs; stacked using DSS; F/5; ISO1600; White Balance set to 5000 Degrees Kelvin.
Processed in LR; Converted to TIF Files; Stacked in DSS; Processed in CS6.

Bottom Image: 14 x 1 Minute subs; stacked using DSS; F/5; ISO1600; White Balance set to 5000 Degrees Kelvin.
Processed in LR; Converted to TIF Files; Stacked in DSS; Processed in CS6. Workflow modified to include Star Mask and additional masks.

Beautiful/terrific work Doug. An interesting deviation from wildlife photography. Well done.
