Gypsy got her name from how I ended up with her. I was with a volunteer worker from the estate I worked when we passed by a traveler halting site. This tiny emaciated puppy was meandering along the walking path next to the busy motorway. My first instinct was to pull over and take her back to her owner since she was right in front of the halting site. But that thought did not last very long. I barked at the volunteer, who was driving, to stop next to the dog. He was quite startled, but readily complied. I jumped out, called the puppy towards me, and she ran right up to me excitedly. I gathered her up, ran back to the jeep, slammed the door shut and said, 'Now drive! And drive fast before they see us!'. The poor French Volunteer didn't understand it at the time, but I had just stolen a lurcher pup from the travelers right under their noses.
Now that pup is a big, strong adult lady living with a good friend of mine who takes her on walks with her horses.
