The City of Rochester is destroying the entrance to the old Rochester subway that ran from about 1927-1956. Rochester was the smallest city in the United States to have a subway. The subway shut down because of falling demand due to the increase in car ownership. The subway now is a haven for graffiti artists and is a tourist attraction for urban explorers. A park is being built along the river and a proposed high-end condo complex is in the works. This will effectively seal off the subway and end access to a unique part of Rochester's history.
