The Pestsäule (English: Plague Column) or Dreifaltigkeitssäule (Trinity Column) is a Holy Trinity column located on the Graben, a street in the inner city of Vienna.
Numerous plague epidemics swept through Vienna, with one of the last big ones in 1679. By the time it ended, nearly 80,000 citizens had died. The Habsburg emperor Leopold I vowed to erect a mercy column if the terrible plague would end, as a symbol of gratitude. And so he did - the column was inaugurated in 1693.
The Baroque memorial is one of the most well-known and prominent sculptural pieces of art in the city. In the top area , you can see figurative representation of the Father and the Son and the Dove representing the Holy Ghost, with a great number of small angels below. Then at the base of the pillar there is a group of sculptures.
