Bird's nest fungi

Ferguson Forest

In the autumn I found a small bit of bark measuring 2 1/2 inches in length, on which was a cluster of bird's nest fungi. I took this home and the fungi has remained intact, a perfect little sculpture. Each "bird's nest" fungus is about 1/8 inch in diameter. You can see the "eggs" in one. In reality, the spore caps which release their spores when hit by raindrops. Two of the fungi have not opened.

Fascinating to see this, especially after reading your caption about their size. Looks like something you would expect to see under water. "V"

Amazing how many things in nature closely resemble others. Will be interesting to see if the other two fungi open up - possibly moisture related?
