A face in the window, Bombay, India, 2016

I made this image from a moving bus, just we passed another bus that had stopped for a moment to pick up passengers. A young boy, sitting next to a window in that bus, caught my eye as we passed. He was looking right into my lens, his eyes wide. Yet he displays no emotion. He makes an effort to look over his shoulder at us, yet neither my camera, nor our bus full of foreigners, seems to provoke an emotional response. We are left to wonder what he may be thinking at this moment.

It is good to be back, Marisa. Actually, I've never really been away. I usually check the comment that arrive every day. As for this child, we aww in his feelings that we put there. We actually have no idea of what happened to be in his mind at the very moment I made this image. We can only guess, and it seems logical that his expression is utterly passive.

Yes Phil, I think that you're right in the perception of resignation and indifference. In a way shows an profound idea of how to expect a different life. Glad to have you back!

His face is indeed like a gesture, Marisa. A gesture of sadness? Perhaps. But also a gesture of resignation, utter lack of comprehension and overwhelming indifference.

Yes we have. We see faces within those frames and try to read their thoughts. And we are all the while shooting through the frames of our vehicle.

He transmits a deep sadness ... his look, the gesture of his face ... almost as if he were dead in life, without hope ...

So many times we have found powerful images through the windows of a bus. This is one of them.
