Winter Lodgings

Amsterdam

We spent four extraordinary days wandering the streets, the cafes, the museums, and the shops of Amsterdam. Our apartment was located behind the two white windows above the middle of the red boat. We had two-burner stove, fridge, sofa, TV, and dining table on that floor, and a king size bed and huge shower on the floor below. It cost far less than a small hotel room. A 36” wide, framed, tack-sharp! copy of this photo hangs above our fireplace at home. I think it is my best capture of all time, although our memories of the trip may have prejudiced that opinion. If you were to take this same image in any other season, the foliage on the trees would have blocked the colors of the buildings.

Thanks, Jim. My wife found the apartment advertised on line. It was similar to the airbnb concept. The owner lives in the floors above that apartment, and rents it out on a short or long term basis. We did the same thing in Paris a few years earlier. Apartments give you more space, the ability to cook (if you are so inclined), and generally a lower price than hotel rooms.

What a great shot, and accompanied by a great story to boot.
You are right about the season - I "lost" some shots due to leaves; though it does change the ambiance.

BTW, how did you get the apartment for just a few days?
