Photographing Birds at the Pond
by Laura Milholland

Las Gallinas Wildlife Ponds, San Rafael, CA

It was a cold day, but plenty of people enjoying the sightings of birds at the ponds.
Although I shot this before I knew the assignment of "Rule of Thirds," I thought this met the
assignment well with the reed/water line and the grass lines hitting at the thirds, and the
main subjects of the people and the Night Heron hitting at the "thirds" intersecting lines.

This is a beautiful scene and so exemplifies the Rule of Thirds. I love that you can not only see the bird watchers, but the herons in the reeds. Great job!

That is a nice peaceful scene and well done for the rule of thirds.

Very well done, Laura, and a perfect fit. Thanks for explaining to the group your details.

My goodness!!! Do you ever have a lot of birds at your local ponds. Here, we never see this many herons that close. And certainly not at this time of year.
