Lili was born a male in Denmark in 1882 and named Einar Wegener. He married
Gerda Wegener. They were both painters. He had sexual reassignment surgery
and was called Lili Elbe. The film "The Danish Girl" was based on the
book of that title by David Ebershoff, which was inspired by their story.
