NGC1360 Robin's Egg Nebula

NGC1360, a.k.a. "Robin's Egg Nebula". A planetary nebula in the constellation
of Fornax. A lovely and distinctively shaped nebula that is different in many
ways to most classical planetary nebula. The deep blue colour comes from the
presence of Oxygen III gas in the nebula and was captured using OIII filters on
my QSI 683 camera. The red material noticeable coming from the north east of
the nebula is said to have been ejected before the central star became a true
planetary nebula. Planetary nebula are formed when the central star reaches the
end of its life and ejects all of its gaseous material out into space.

The nebula is approximately 111 x 7.5 arcminutes in size and is located at a
distance of about 1800 light years from earth. Fairly close in the overall
scheme of things.
