Hieronymus Bosch (ca 1450-1516), Christ mocked, ca 1495-1500, oil on oak, 74 x 59 cm.
Doornenkroning van Christus.
The painting portrays four sadistic tormentors encircling the white-robed Christ, at a moment just before the actual torture is going to happen. The soldier bearing a turban pierced by an arrow holds a crown of thorns above Christ’s head. At the right, the second tormentor bearing a collar with spikes presses his hand on Christ’s right shoulder. At the right below, both hands of the third figure tugs at Christ’s robe, while at the opposite site, the hand of the fourth tormentor with a pointed goatee beard shamelessly touches Christ’s knee. But Christ, resigned, ignores the pressing, threatening actions of these villains and looks gently at us, witnesses of his torments.
